David Thies-Thompson, Music Director
A member of the NAC Orchestra since 1990, David Thies-Thompson has been busy in Ottawa, featured as a recitalist, chamber musician, soloist (with the NAC Orchestra, Thirteen Strings and the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra), as guest concertmaster of the Thirteen Strings and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and concertmaster of the newly formed Opera Lyra Orchestra.
David Thies-Thompson was born in 1967 to Canadian parents who were serving as medical missionaries in Kenya. His family returned to Canada in 1972, taking up residence in Victoria, B.C. David began violin studies at age seven - first by the Suzuki method and then, until 1985, with Sydney Humphreys at the Victoria Conservatory. David is an Associate of the Victoria Conservatory and of the Royal Conservatory of Music, and received further education at the Banff Centre, Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Eastman School of Music and McGill University. His professional career began at age 15 in the Victoria Symphony and in 1988, he joined Symphony Nova Scotia.
David also teaches and enjoys coaching and conducting youth and adult amateurs in the community. He has been Music Director of the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra since 1999. David and his wife Jenifir, flutist and Pilates instructor, are raising four wonderful children.
